Anatomy— Spine, Skeletal, Muscle, NerveSpine and Skeletal Anatomy
Understanding anatomy is crucial to good monitoring. It is important to know which nerve structures are at risk. In addition to providing support, spinal structures protect the spinal cord and nerve roots. Knowing sensory and motor pathways and what can affect them leads to the application of the proper modality at the right time. A thorough understanding of the muscular system is necessary to monitor spontaneously elicited and triggered electromyographic responses.

This module introduces basic anatomy relative to intraoperative monitoring. The purpose is to guide you to properly prepare the patient for monitoring, determine stimulation and recording points, and understand the anatomical structures placed at risk. Anatomy to be covered includes:

  • Spinal structures
  • Skeletal system
  • Muscle system
  • Nerve structures
  • Cranial nerves
  • Autonomic system

* Pocket guides are provided for this module
